Top 20 Defensive Prospects


  1. Erik Brännström- An offensive defenseman who displays great puck moving skills as well as skating skills. Defensively he is able to retrieve loose pucks quickly and transition the play back to offense. Brännström draws similar comparisons to Torey Krug.

  2. Cale Makar- A very skilled offensive defenseman who has a very high hockey IQ. On the smaller side, Makar still possesses outstanding skating skills and is very quick. Potential franchise defenseman for the Colorado Avalanche and he draws comparisons to Erik Karlsson. 
  3. Noah Dobson- A two-way defenseman that is very skilled in all situations. Offensively, he is a playmaker with great vision. He has a good shot and soft hands. Defensively, Dobson is a skilled skater who maintains his positioning and keeps good gap cap control. He is effective on the powerplay as well as the penalty kill. He has potential to be a top pairing defenseman, and he draws some comparisons to Alex Pietrangelo.
  4. Quinn Hughes- An elite defenseman who brings speed and outstanding playmaking skills. Hughes is not afraid to rush the puck up ice while also pinching in for a passing or shooting play. Defensively, he's strong at transitioning the play back to offense. Quinn Hughes draws similar comparisons to Shayne Gostisbehere.
  5. Adam Boqvist- Offensively Boqvist is a major threat. With his excellent vision and puck handling skills he walks the line well and is very patient with the puck. He can make tape to tape passes from almost anywhere while creating space for scoring opportunities for his teammates. Defensively, Boqvist has an active stick and does well at creating turnovers, while also maintaining good gap control. Boqvist is a potential  franchise defenseman and draws many comparisons to Erik Karlsson.
  6. Bowen Byram- Possibly the best defenseman coming out of the 2019 NHL Draft, Byram is an exception defenseman with a high hockey IQ. He is a good puck mover and knows when it's a good time to pass or shoot. Defensively, he reads plays well while also having an active stick. Byram is also not afraid to get physical and knock opposing players hard off the puck. Byram has the potential to be a number one defenseman in the NHL. He also draws comparisons to Drew Doughty.
  7. Evan Bouchard- Bouchard is a very smart defenseman who is poised with the puck and is good at making shooting or passing plays. He likes being the quarterback on the powerplay and developing plays on his own. He also has a very strong slap shot from the point. Defensively, Bouchard is physical and keeps players to the outside. Bouchard draws similar comparisons to Brent Burns. 
  8. Ty Smith- Smith is an elite skater who has excellent speed in both directions.  He is a good stickhandler who controls the puck well, creating many passing or scoring opportunities for himself or teammates. Even though Smith is undersized, he is smart at defensive positioning and does well at getting the puck out of his own end. Smith also has a very active stick knocking players off the puck. He draws comparisons to Shayne Gostisbehere. 
  9. Rasmus Sandin- Very mobile defenseman who is very intelligent offensively. He has good vision making him a great playmaker, especially on the powerplay. Defensively, he is strong on the puck and is not afraid to get physical. He draws comparisons to Jake Muzzin. 
  10. Timothy Liljegren- Liljegren is an elite skater who has excellent vision and playmaking skills. He is a very good stickhandler who can get the puck out of the zone fast. He maintains good gap control and has an active stick. He has potential to be a top pairing defenseman, and draws comparisons to Oliver Ekman-Larsson. 
  11. Adam Fox- An elite offensive producer with outstanding skating skills. He is poise with the puck and is very patient. He likes to join the rush up ice, or being the quarterback on the powerplay. Fox is a solid passer and shooter. He’s good at attacking players with the puck, especially during one-on-ones. He draws similarities to Ryan Elias. 
  12. K’Andre Miller-  A very good skater with great stickhandling skills. He does well at creating the transition play with a strong breakout pass out of the zone. Miller has good vision and playmaking abilities, and creates opportunities for himself and teammates. Defensively he is physical and maintains good gap control. Miller draws some similarities to Morgan Rielly. 
  13. Nicolas Hague- Hague is a physical two-way defenseman with great skating ability. He is a quick player who walks the line well for a shooting opportunity. Hague also has a very powerful and accurate snapshot. He does need to work on his passing as it’s only a decent pass coming out of the zone. Defensively he battles hard and has very good defensive instincts. His game resembles Tyler Myers.
  14. Callan Foote- A strong two-way defenseman who is very good at reading plays. He is an excellent skater who is good at making the first pass out of the zone. Foote also has a very good shot and is able to keep it low for rebound opportunities. He does well at battling in the corners and in front of the net. He draws comparisons to Seth Jones. 
  15. Ryan Merkley- Is a very dynamic skater with outstanding puck skills. He has great speed going up ice, and with his vision and playmaking skills, he is a very dangerous player. Merkley also has a decent shot and is good at keeping it low. Defensively he is not very good with position and decision making skills. 
  16. Bode Widle- Widle is a very talented defenseman who plays a 200ft game. He is a smooth skater who can make a great breakout pass. He is very poise with the puck and is quick at stickhandling up ice. Widle also has a great shot from the point and has the ability to keep it low for rebound opportunities for teammates. Defensively he is physical and maintains good gap control. Widle’s game resembles Dustin Byfuglien’s.
  17. Philip Broberg- Philip Broberg is a skilled defenseman who’s skating defines his game. He handles the puck well and with his first few steps are very fast. He is good at rushing the puck up ice and creating offense with his vision and passing skills. Broberg has also has a decent shot. Defensively, he is very smart and is great at cutting off passing or shooting lanes. He is strong at battling along the boards or in front of the net. Broberg game is similar to Mattias Ekholm.
  18. Uso Valimaki- Uso Valimaki is an amazing skater with good speed in both directions. He is confident at leading the rush up ice and making that big first pass. He has a great shot from the point that is very dangerous on the power play. With his high hockey IQ he almost always makes the right plays offensively. Defensively, he plays a simple game, but he is strong along the boards as well as in front of the net. Valimaki is also great at reading plays. His game resembles Matthias Ekholm.
  19. Antti Honka- Even though Honka is smaller, he is an outstanding skating with great speed and acceleration. He is strong at carrying the puck out of the zone with his good stickhandling skills. Honka is a great passer and he is very smart when leading the rush. Defensively, he needs to work more on positioning but is good along the boards and in front of the net. 
  20.  Josh Brook- Josh Brook is a very good skater who can easily turn the puck from defense to offense quickly.  With his hands he can skate the puck out of danger and make that great first breakout pass. Brook can be a leader on the power play as he always gives his teammates quality opportunities. Brook also has a great shot from the blueline. Defensively, Brook is strong and clears the front of the net well. He also maintains good gap control and is hard to beat during one-on-ones. His games resembles Duncan Keith.
