Jan Mysak Interview: 2020 NHL Draft

By: Clare McManus

Question: When did you start playing hockey and who was your favorite player growing up?
Answer: I started when I was 3 years old. My favorite player was Jaromír Jagr.

Question: What do you like most about the position you play and what kind of playing style do you bring to a team?
Answer: I don’t really care about my position. I can play C or wing. Every position has good things. I am smart. I can score goals and I can be a good playmaker. I can make my teammates better.

Question: Now this year you came to North America to play for the Hamilton Bulldogs in the OHL. How was your transition from Europe to North America?
Answer:  It was a big challenge for me. It was maybe a little hard. In Europe the size of the rink is bigger. Different styles of hockey. There is more physical play in Canada.

Question: Did you have any pre-game rituals that would keep you focused?
Answer: Of course. I have before every game the same warm up.

Question: Now regarding the Draft. Obviously the NHL draft is postponed until further notice. How does it make you feel to not know when the draft will be held?
Answer: It's a little weird. I don’t know important things. But I am trying to stay positive. Just work hard, stay healthy. Prepare myself for the next season. That’s the most important thing for me right now.

Question: yeah that’s important! Are there any rinks nearby that are open, or even parks, you can practice at?
Answer: Yes. Of course. I have a little gym. So I can work there. I can also skate on a skatemill. So that’s good.

Question: yeah definitely. Besides training, have you been able to watch any TV shows or movies. Have you played any video games?
Answer: Yes. I like The walking dead, peaky blinders. Sometimes I play FIFA with my brother.

Question: For some fun. Who would your dream NHL line be?
Answer: Me in the middle ,Jake VORÁČEK and David Pastrnak on wings:)

Question: I like that line combination! Now I meant to ask you. How was it playing at the World Juniors in December?
Answer: It was the best hockey experience I’ve had. Czech fans were awesome. It was great! It's a pity that we lost the quarterfinal.

Question: That’s good you had fun. I was hoping you guys would win. Loved the Czech team! Now lastly. What pushes you through the hard times in hockey?
Answer: My positive mind of course! I know that every time when the situation is bad, it’s gonna be ok. It will turn, if you are positive, if you work hard and if you believe in yourself. I know that one day I will laugh at that. But hard times are really important. They will push you more than good times:)

Question: That’s great advice. It’s true. Gotta stay positive! Thank you for doing this too. I’ll be rooting for you in the draft. You're my favorite prospect.
Answer: Thank you! I appreciate it.
